Navigating the World of Medical Hair Loss Treatments is Not Easy
Hair loss can be a cause of much anguish for many men, and women. This blog will discuss specifically hair loss treatment for men. Androgenic alopecia (male-pattern baldness) occurs in a specific pattern. Bi-temporal recession with bald spot on occipito-vertex region. In other words, hairline recedes on both sides of forehead and bald spot appears at top/back of head. This process is driven by testosterone.
There are two main drugs that work to inhibit this process of hair loss, both work in completely different ways.
Finasteride: The Testosterone Inhibitor
The first is Finasteride. This works by inhibiting the production of a specific type of high potency testosterone in your body. It works well to slow male pattern baldness but it may cause side effects associated with low testosterone. This includes impotence. In my opinion, this defeats the purpose of having a full head of hair.
Minoxidil: The Preferred Option
The other drug to treat hair loss is called Minoxidil. It is an old anti-high blood pressure drug that was found to cause hair growth in people using it. It does this probably by relaxing blood vessels, and thus increasing blood flow, to the hair follicles.
Minoxidil is my favourite drug to treat hair loss. It can be used as a topical spray, or taken orally.
