Keloids are a result of abnormal wound healing characterised by excessive collagen production extending beyond the original injury. Our keloid treatment protocol uses a multimodal approach to target both the biological and structural components of the scar.
Intralesional injections of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) combined with a potent corticosteroid are administered directly into the keloid. 5-FU inhibits fibroblast proliferation and abnormal collagen synthesis, while corticosteroids reduce inflammation and suppress excessive scar tissue formation. This combination is more effective than steroid treatment alone and significantly lowers recurrence rates.
Following injections, cryotherapy is applied to selectively destroy scar tissue through controlled freezing, further reducing scar bulk and firmness. Treatments are carefully spaced to maximise effectiveness while minimising side effects such as skin thinning, ulceration, or pigment changes.
Healing occurs gradually over several weeks, and even large or long-standing keloids can be significantly flattened. The final result is typically a softer, flatter scar, often leaving a patch of hypopigmented but stable skin.
